Learning the piano

piano-2.jpg

I started piano lessons today. I’ve been wanting to do this for years. In preparation for starting to venture out and play some shows I decided I might as well expand my repertoire.

Many many years ago I took guitar lessons from Mike Williams at South Austin Music. Our paths crossed a few years ago and we have kept in touch. Nowadays, Mike teaches piano too.

My first lesson was today and it went great. I’m really excited about learning the piano. If you live in Austin and are interested in learning piano or guitar, please email Mike Williams at m88williams@mac.com and tell him Tom Meny sent you!

Charlie bit me!

•February 13, 2008 • 2 Comments

“Charlie bit me!” — that’s something we heard around my house all the time when I was growing up. We had a dog from the Philippines named Charlie and he was SUPER protective of us, and his food. If you came close to anyone in the family, that dog would attack… if you came close to his food while he was eating (no matter who you were) he’d attack. So, in the spirit of good ole’ Charlie…

I got a nice little plug on youtube today…

A guy named Shawn Megofna gave me a shout out on one of his videos tonight. Check him out if you get a chance, he plays the ukulele and has a FANTASTIC cover of Hey There Delilah. And if you don’t already know, my YouTube profile name is Bobostonepony, so when he says that name, that’s me… Thanks man!

This is why the game is so great.

Happy Birthday Scott Heyse

•January 26, 2008 • 1 Comment

Today, Scott Heyse would have been 39. Scott’s wife Bernadette commented on the blog I wrote on the day he passed. She and the kids are doing better. I’m glad she was able to find the blog because there were some nice words left by some of the guys in India that Scott was so hospitable to. Happy Birthday Scott. You are certainly missed.

For those of you who knew Scott, or even if you did not, there is a memorial fund at Chase Bank. It would be a personal favor to me if you donated. You can go to any Chase Bank branch and write a check payable to the “Scott Heyse Memorial Fund” (account #48759)

Screw zoo’s!

•January 22, 2008 • No Comments

I disagree with the idea of penning animals in cages so that we can stare at them like idiots. So… if I were an ape, I’d do this too….. serves you right! I’m guessing this is the ape’s way of saying “F… YOU!” to the world…

Winnersbank 200, revisited

•January 10, 2008 • 1 Comment

winners9.jpg

As promised… I said before that I would review the WinnersBank200 after returning from Vegas. And as I predicted, I have nothing but great things to say about it.

(check out how it works here before reading on)

I first used the WinnersBank200 on day 1 of my trip. A co-worker of mine was also in Vegas and he hadn’t been to Fremont before so we decided to go over to the Golden Nugget and get some lunch. After eating the $20 buffet (which was only mediocre) we decided to play some 3 card poker. We found a $5 table and started playing.

Dave had won several hands and I wasn’t having much luck. I told Dave “I’m not having any luck so it’s time for me to go…….. ” and after about a 3 second pause “but first I’m gonna do this” and I upped my bet from $5 to $10 on each (in 3 card poker you can make between 1 and 3 bets). It was then that I hit my straight flush (which pays 40 to 1 in the pair plus bet and I’m not exactly sure what the 2nd and 3rd bets pay out)… this was good for over $500. Immediately, I put that $500 chip in the winners bank200. With the key safely placed in my hotel room back at the Luxor, there was NO WAY I could lose that $500 profit during this outing. I would need to go all the way back to my hotel room to get into the handy little safe.

My budget was $500 per day while in Vegas. This would include food, tips, and gambling. I would use the WinnersBank200 on each of my 7 days while in Vegas. On day 2, I won two $300 jackpots on the slots and would immediately put that money in the WinnersBank200 and therefore had $500 essentially to blow.

Later, I would win $1000 on a slotslotwin.jpg and that too would go into the personal safe.

Even while playing craps, I would “go south” (going south means to take winnings off the table and put them in your pocket, this is generally not acceptable in poker but ok in games where you play against the casino like blackjack, craps, and other table games). Everytime I won another hundred I would put more chips into the bank. EVERYBODY wanted to know about the Winners Bank200. The pit bosses would give me an akward stare as I safely stored green chips in my handy little safe. Had I taken 50 of those banks with me I could have easily made $40 a pop right there in the casinos. I explained to curious onlookers what the bank was a minimum of 20 times during this trip.

I cannot stress enough how much I recommend this little invention to ANYONE planning a trip to a casino. I am sure that I will be buying a few as gifts for my family and friends.

Go get yourself one………..

There’s nothing funnier than watching a kid get kicked real real hard in the face…… In the immortal words of that A.D.D kid from the Cobra Kai’s in Karate Kid “Get’em a body bag…hee heee heee!” poor kid :( The kid’s name is even Daniel… how great is that!

And wewonder why kids today are SO incredibly violent.  Listen as this kid drops to the floor how many people are cheering.  SAD SAD SAD.

10 Amazingly Simple Tricks To Turn Your Brain Into A Powerful Thinking Machine

There are two basic principles to keep your brain healthy and sharp as you age: variety and curiosity. When anything you do becomes second nature, you need to make a change. If you can do the crossword puzzle in your sleep, it’s time for you to move on to a new challenge in order to get the best workout for your brain. Curiosity about the world around you, how it works and how you can understand it will keep your brain working fast and efficiently. Use the ideas below to help attain your quest for mental fitness.

1. Read a Book

Pick a book on an entirely new subject. Read a novel set in Egypt. Learn about economics. There are many excellent popular non-fiction books that do a great job entertaining you while teaching about a subject. Become an expert in something new each week. Branch out from familiar reading topics. If you usually read history books, try a contemporary novel. Read foreign authors, the classics and random books. Not only will your brain get a workout by imagining different time periods, cultures and peoples, you will also have interesting stories to tell about your reading, what it makes you think of and the connections you draw between modem life and the words.

2. Play Games

Games are a wonderful way to tease and challenge your brain. Suduko, crosswords and electronic games can all improve your brain’s speed and memory. These games rely on logic, word skills, math and more. These games are also fun. You’ll get benefit more by doing these games a little bit every day-spend 15 minutes or so, not hours.

3. Use Your Opposite Hand

Spend the day doing things with your non-dominant hand. If you are left-handed, open doors with your right hand. If you are right-handed, try using your keys with your left. This simple task will cause your brain to lay down some new pathways and rethink daily tasks. Wear your watch on the opposite hand to remind you to switch.

4. Learn Phone Numbers

Our modem phones remember every number that calls them. No one memorizes phone numbers anymore, but it is a great memory Skill. Learn a new phone number everyday.

5. Eat for Your Brain

Your brain needs you to eat healthy fats. Focus on fish oils from wild salmon, nuts such as walnuts, seeds such as flax seed and olive oil. Eat more of these foods and less saturated fats. Eliminate transfats completely from your diet.

6. Break the Routine

We love our routines. We have hobbies and pastimes that we could do for hours on end. But the more something is second nature, the less our brains have to work to do it. To really help your brain stay young, challenge it. Change routes to the grocery store, use your opposite hand to open doors and eat dessert first. All this will force your brain to wake up from habits and pay attention again.

7. Go a Different way

Drive or walk a different way to wherever you go. This little change in routine helps the brain practice special memory and directions. Try different side streets go through stores in a different order anything to change your route.

8. Learn a New Skill

Learning a new skill works multiple areas of the brain. Your memory comes into play, you learn new movements and you associate things differently. Reading Shakespeare, learning to cook and building an airplane out of tooth picks all will challenge your brain and give you something to think about.

9. Make Lists

Lists are wonderful. Making lists helps us to associate items with one another. Make a list of all the places you have traveled. Make a list of the tastiest foods you have eaten. Make a list of the best presents you have been given. Make one list every day to jog your memory and make new connections. But don’t become too reliant on them. Make your grocery list, but then try to shop without it. Use the list once you have put every item you can think of in your cart. Do the same with your “to do” lists.

10. Choose a new skill

Find something that captivates you that you can do easily in your home and doesn’t cost too much. Photography with a digital camera, learning to draw, learning a musical instrument learning new cooking styles, or writing are all great choices.
