I won the open mic at Billy’s Ice House in New Braunfels tonight! Had a great time.
My buddy Aaron told me about an open mic contest in New Braunfels (about 40 minutes away from Austin. If you win you get a free $30 bar tab the following monday and then all four winners (1 per week) compete at the end of the month for the chance to play a paying gig. Had a lot of fun. Played 6 songs. Thanks to Wes Nickson for being a fantastic host. That guy should be FAMOUS!

Open mic at Cheatham Street Warehouse in San Marcos, TX
Kent Finlay’s Cheatham Street Warehouse in San Marcos, TX is an historic venue. The relatively small stage has hosted some really big names. Cheatham Street is also credited with being the musical birth place of some of today’s biggest names ( including George Strait ) and nurtured the early careers of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Will and Charlie Sexton and Terri Hendrix.
I had heard of Kent Finlay’s Wednesday night songwriter’s circle but didn’t really look into it until recently. Kent Finlay is very serious about giving each songwriter the respect they deserve. He asks that you do not talk or make a lot of noise when someone is performing.. and also asks that you do not leave right after you play. It’s very different from any other open mic and that makes for a very different experience.
Everyone was extremely friendly and welcoming. It was an honor.
One of my songs may be used in a movie
I am a member of Broadjam, and I submitted a couple of songs for a licensing opportunity to be used in a movie. My song “Happiest Place on Earth” is 1 of 5 songs that were chosen as possible songs for use in the movie.
This is the description: Description: A film about drugs and hookers – “A Punk/Rock junkie film.”
Hopefully they will use more than one because I listened to the others and really liked this one by Hiding in Public.

Anyway, wish me luck. It’s not a tremendous amount of money but it’s still money! Plus, I like the idea of having a song in a movie about drugs and hookers
