Last night we completed the last of the “comps”.  Comping is when you take bits and pieces of performances , cut them, paste them, and then lay out the best version of all the takes.  For example, if a trumpet player comes in to play a solo or some “padding” they might do the same part 4 or 5 times.  Then, we take the best entire take, or bits and pieces from each take, and then put them all together on 1 track.

So now, we’re officially mixing!  Mixing is when you take all the tracks (drums, vocals, harmonies, strings, horns, guitars, etc) and manipulate the volume of each part so it doesn’t just sound like we threw everything in… it makes the songs sound smooth, balanced and it’s important that the mix sounds good in stereo speakers, car speakers, headphones, and any other method you might listen to music.  I mix might sound fantastic coming out of the studio speakers, but sound terrible coming out of car speakers.  So it’s a vital vital part of the production process.

After all the songs are mixed, we will send the songs to a place in town to master the CD.  Mastering deals with sound and frequencies.  It is done so that all of the songs sound great as a group.  One song can’t be really loud, and then the next song very very quiet.

Then, I’ll take the mixed and mastered songs to a place in town called Affordable Sound.  They’ll mass produce them, i’ll pick them up and send them to YOU, the kickstarter pledgers!

You should get yours in November!  I know I still owe some of you the 4 song demo as well.  I apologize for the delay.  I figured it would be easier/cheaper to send everything out at once.
